Bone Mineral Densitometry
eV-CZT™ Revolutioned Dual Energy X-ray Absorptometry (DEXA)
Bone densitometers are used to determine a patient's bone quality; assisting
the doctor in diagnosis and management of diseases such as osteoporosis.
Through a development with eV PRODUCTS, Lunar Corporation (now part
of GE Healthcare), the world leader in bone densitometry, introduced
the first CZT-based revolutionary DEXA densitometer, the Prodigy,
in 1997. Bone densitometry uses an ultra-stable dual-energy X-ray
source to quantify small changes, ~1%, in a patient's bone mineral
density. This application requires an X-ray photon energy discriminating
sensor that has high efficiency, high energy resolution, high count
rate performance and exceptional long-term stability to enable Dual
Energy X-ray Absorptometry (DEXA). This successful application of
CZT has allowed the Lunar Prodigy to become the preferred bone densitometry
system, out selling competitive products 2:1. There are now thousands
of Lunar Prodigy units in clinical use attesting to the performance
and reliability of eV-CZT.
